NDI Announces Hiring of First Resident Director in Taiwan

Today, the National Democratic Institute (NDI) announced the hiring of former Taiwan diplomat Alfred Wu as the Institute’s first resident director for its newly opened office in Taipei.

Wu comes to NDI with over a decade of diverse experience in multiple fields. He is a former Taiwan diplomat, serving in New York, Bangkok and Yangon. He has also worked for the United Nations Development Programme in Myanmar, focusing on government engagement and development assistance coordination.

“It is an honor to be able to join the NDI team at such an important time for democracy,” said Wu. “I look forward to working with our partners in Taiwan to leverage Taiwan's unique expertise and experience with NDI's global network.”

"We are extremely excited to open NDI's first ever office in Taipei under Alfred's leadership,” said Manpreet Singh Anand, director of NDI’s Asia-Pacific program. “In the face of rising challenges to democracy throughout the Asia-Pacific region, Taiwan is an increasingly important partner in defending core democratic principles.”

The opening of the new office marks an expansion of NDI’s partnerships with Taiwan’s government, civil society and tech community to promote open government, counter disinformation, foster gender equality in politics and defend democracy in the region. With support from the National Endowment for Democracy and the U.S. Department of State, NDI has launched multiple new initiatives in Taiwan, including the new “Faces of Democracy: Taiwan” series highlighting Taiwan’s leadership on gender equality and a regional youth development program leveraging Taiwan’s robust experience in youth civic participation.

NDI’s new Taipei office joins NDI’s network of over a dozen field offices across Asia. For more information on NDI’s work in Taiwan, please follow @NDIAsia on Twitter or visit www.ndi.org/asia/taiwan
