ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Democratic Institute (NDI) will field an international observation mission for Nigeria’s presidential and legislative elections on Feb. 14.

Moroccans have been frustrated with the slow pace of reforms envisioned in the revised 2011 constitution, and increasingly see political leaders as disconnected from their everyday concerns.

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) organized this round of focus groups in May 2015 as the Essid government neared the milestone of its first 100 days.

In September 2015, Moroccans voted in the first regional and local elections since the 2011 constitutional revision. The one-year period between these municipal polls and the October 2016 legislative elections presents an opportunity for political parties to gather, analyze and respond to citizen reactions to the campaign period and to Moroccan elections more broadly.

NDI Chairman Madeleine K. Albright, President Kenneth Wollack and Regional Director Leslie Campbell issued the following statement:

This manual captures the lessons learned and best practices for constituency outreach, based on the experience of the 14 Moroccan members of parliament and their assistants who were trained by the National Democratic Institute.

Through its USAID-funded program to empower and support political parties, NDI conducted 24 focus groups in six regions of Morocco to gauge citizens’ priorities and preferences in the months leading up to the October 2016 legislative elections. Focus group participants highlighted employment, education, and healthcare as their three top concerns, underlining the need for parties to address these issues in their campaigns.

In March 2018, the Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening (CEPPS) assessed the status of electoral preparations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) ahead of the presidential, legislative, and provincial assembly elections scheduled for December 23, 2018.
