TBILISI – Poll results released today by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and CRRC Georgia show public opinion on the most important reform facing the country, a new constitution. Only 32 percent of Georgians reported that they were aware of the process to change the constitution, and of those few who were aware, the majority (59 percent) reports they do not have enough information about the changes. Only 2 percent participated in parliament’s public meetings.

This statement is offered by an international delegation organized by the National Democratic Institute (NDI). The delegation’s purpose was to accurately and impartially assess electoral preparations in advance of the October local elections; review the broader political environment; examine factors that could affect the integrity of the electoral process; and offer any recommendations that could advance dialogue and consensus-building toward peaceful, credible elections and public confidence in the process. In August, NDI will deploy a team of long-term observers.

Concerns surrounding the economy dominated the conversation during NDI’s most recent focus group discussions. The focus groups reveal that citizens view both relations with Russia and Georgia's integration to the European Union through an economic advantages lens. NDI conducts focus groups to complement its nationwide public opinion polling and applies the results to help local partners diagnose, understand and address citizens’ concerns.
