Joint Statement by IRI and NDI on Upcoming Elections in Ghana

Washington, DC – The National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI) issued the following statement ahead of Ghana’s general elections, scheduled to take place on Monday, December 7, 2020:

After five electoral cycles, Bougainville has proven its political and social will to conduct peaceful elections. Recognizing the historic importance of the 2020 general elections, voters held high expectations for a well-planned and successfully executed election as they turned out to elect the body that will negotiate the region’s independence from PNG. Moreover, the elections presented an opportunity to support greater political participation of women and promote their inclusion in the process for independence.

In the local elections held on November 15, after 20 years in power in Sarajevo Canton and Banja Luka, SDA (Party of Democratic Action) lost most of the mayoral positions in Sarajevo Canton municipalities. SNSD (Alliance of the Independent Social Democrats) also lost the mayoral position in Banja Luka. It should be noted that those parties would probably keep the majority in the local assemblies in those municipalities, but the victory of opposition mayoral candidates could be understood as the beginning of a new political paradigm in Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole.

TBILISI – The National Democratic Institute (NDI, or the Institute) announced today the start of a virtual election analysis mission ahead of the October 31 parliamentary elections in Georgia - the third phase of its international election integrity program. The analysis will focus on several key themes, including election administration, the campaign environment, the information environment, gender and inclusion and the impact of covid-19. NDI will issue a report detailing its findings on November 3.

Georgia will hold parliamentary elections on October 31, 2020. The National Democratic Institute issued a report assessing the pre-election environment on August 19. This update bulletin is based on analysis conducted by a team of eight international election experts who, paired with assistants based in Georgia, are tracking the work of the electoral administration, campaign environment, gender and inclusion, media and disinformation, and the impact of covid-19.

NDI supports a collaborative group of Tunisian civil society organizations - including the Tunisian Mediterranean Center (TuMed), the Ofiya Coalition for Democracy and Integrity of the Elections, IWatch, Youth Without Borders (JSF), Mourakiboun, and the Chahed Observatory - to monitor the electoral process in Tunisia. In 2019, with technical support from NDI, these organizations monitored the snap presidential and legislative organizations.

PODGORICA, MONTENEGRO. The National Democratic Institute (NDI) has conducted a public opinion poll in Montenegro in early August on the process leading to the parliamentary elections on August 30. The nationwide poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.18 percentage points with a 95 percent confidence level. Key findings:

> Montenegro's overall direction. Citizens are split over whether Montenegro is heading in the right or wrong direction, arrayed largely along partisan and ethnic lines.
