Over the past 15 to 20 years, Georgia has faced widespread disinformation and propaganda campaigns, many of which began long before the issue came to the fore globally. The impact of these disinformation campaigns multiplied as Georgia’s rates of internet penetration doubled between 2013 and 2020. And the impacts increased, even more, when campaigns moved more online during the COVID-19 pandemic.  A vibrant civil society has been exploring the effects and patterns of disinformation since 2015, with an emphasis on anti-democratic, anti-EU and anti-NATO narratives.

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) has released the results of its latest national survey in Ukraine. According to the study, completed in July - August 2021, Ukrainians remain united in their desire for the country's democratic future. Although the overall mood in the country is less optimistic compared to previous waves, people in Ukraine are still politically engaged and are willing to provide their input to the government.

Political parties should play key roles in democratic governance by representing citizens and aggregating their concerns into policy, and by vetting, selecting and influencing political leaders. However, corruption, state capture, populism and opaque party organizations undermine public confidence in parties around the world, fueling political instability.

WASHINGTON – Expert teams from the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) are visiting Tbilisi immediately ahead of the October 2, 2021, municipal elections and are calling on all political parties to uphold democratic principles by participating actively and in good faith during the elections and in the post-election period. If the parties genuinely commit themselves to constructive competition and dialogue rooted in citizen interests, Georgia can maintain its legitimate place among the region's democracies.

Washington, D.C. – As part of a Limited Election Observation Mission for Ethiopia (LEOME), the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) announce the release of their joint report on Ethiopia’s June 21, 2021 national elections. The report (found on IRI and NDI websites respectively) offers a comprehensive assessment of the electoral environment and is informed by the LEOME’s ongoing remote analysis since April and limited in-country technical assessment.

The National Democratic Institute’s (NDI’s) guide on Supporting Social Accountability Campaigns with Sample-Based Observation is a resource for social accountability advocates to determine when and how to utilize sample-based observation (SBO) to strengthen their advocacy campaigns where processes can be independently observed, objectively measured and are large enough in scale to be sampled.
