The National Democratic Institute sought to explore attitudes toward women’s political participation in Ukraine using cutting-edge public opinion research techniques. NDI investigated voter preferences on candidate gender, gender balance and quotas in elected institutions, the role of political parties in women’s political participation, and the barriers women candidates face when running for office.

KYIV, Ukraine – The National Democratic Institute (NDI) announced the arrival here today of its pre-election assessment mission for the Oct. 26 parliamentary polls.

The delegation will be in Ukraine Sept. 15-19 and will have a news conference to announce its findings at noon on Sept. 19 at the Ukraine Crisis Media Center.

Several important social trends have been observed in NDI Ukraine's latest nationwide survey, completed in July 2017. These trends include growing support for gender equality in political life, rising demand for a more modern, service-based relationship between government and society, and increased willingness to participate in elections and civic activities.

WASHINGTON, DC—The National Democratic Institute (NDI) will field a pre-election assessment mission for the May 25 presidential election in Ukraine.

The mission, which will be in Ukraine April 7-11, seeks to demonstrate the interest of the international community in the development of the country’s democratic political process and offer an impartial assessment of the political environment.

Oleksandra Shchukina is the head of Smart Media, an NDI-supported civil society organization that helps Ukraine’s citizens understand key reforms. She was raised in a family with civic and patriotic values, values which have given her strength during Russia’s war against Ukraine. “I am inspired by how caring our people are, by their desire to help others. My own patriotism and national identity come from my own family,” Oleksandra says.

According to new polling by the National Democratic Institute (NDI), Ukrainians are steadfast in their commitment to their country’s democratic future. 76 percent of respondents want Ukraine to become a fully functioning democracy,  with human rights protection, equal justice for all, freedom of speech and free and fair elections. 

The number of Ukrainians who want to join NATO – as well as the European Union – is growing. NATO Secretary General Jans Stoltenberg has commented that "NATO's door is open" for Ukraine to join the alliance, and recent discussions have centered on lowering the threshold for entry.

Ukrainians remain overwhelmingly united on the key issues at stake in their country. NDI public opinion research, conducted in November and December 2016, shows that the majority of the citizens surveyed see Russian influence as negative and are unwilling to give up Ukraine’s sovereignty, even if it means an end to the conflict.

Ten years ago, Ukraine surprised many when thousands braved police violence on Kyiv’s streets to protest their corrupt, pro-Russian president. A decade after the “Revolution of Dignity” and almost two years into Russia’s full-scale military assault, a recent poll from the National Democratic Institute (NDI) shows Ukrainians continue to surprise.

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) has released the results of its latest national survey in Ukraine. According to the study, completed in July - August 2021, Ukrainians remain united in their desire for the country's democratic future. Although the overall mood in the country is less optimistic compared to previous waves, people in Ukraine are still politically engaged and are willing to provide their input to the government.
