Over three decades of independence, Ukrainians have consistently defended their democracy against threats both external and internal. The “Revolution of Dignity” in 2014 demonstrated the Ukrainian commitment to democratic reforms and a closer relationship with the West. Most recently, the brutal full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has reinforced Ukrainian support for the country’s democratic future, according to NDI’s public opinion research. 

Youth Building a Stronger Ukraine

With the second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine coming soon, Ukrainian young people are being called upon and shaping the present and future of Ukraine. Some serve their country through their military service, while others, like Kateryna Hlushchenko, support Ukrainian civil society and are beginning to plan what the future of a free Ukraine would look like.

Building Consensus Around Ukraine’s Future

At a November 10-12 consensus-building session organized by NDI and the European Parliament, Ukrainian parliamentary leaders agreed to take new steps to strengthen the rights of the political opposition and hold elections only after the war, when they can be held in competitive conditions and under the current election law. These pacts, by government and opposition, demonstrated a unified commitment to practically applying democratic practices in a prolonged wartime environment.
