Washington, D.C. – The National Democratic Institute (NDI) announced today a major gift of $750,000 in general operating support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
“We are honored by the trust MacArthur Foundation is placing in NDI with this extraordinary gift. Unrestricted support like this is so precious, and represents a strong vote of confidence in NDI’s approach,” said NDI’s president, Dr. Tamara Cofman Wittes. “This extraordinary gift will accelerate our work to meet the unprecedented challenges facing democracy and to make democracy work for more citizens around the world.”
This is the MacArthur Foundation’s first contribution to NDI, and comes as part of the Foundation’s “Set it at Six” Initiative. “MacArthur’s commitment to devote additional funds to grants this year is a powerful example of how philanthropy can strengthen the resilience of the nonprofit sector in challenging times,” added Dr. Wittes.
The meaningful gift from the MacArthur Foundation will bolster NDI’s work with courageous and committed partners around the world to ensure credible elections, help citizens hold governments accountable, bring more people into democratic politics, and create a more stable, peaceful and prosperous world for everyone.
