What We Do
Democracy Innovation Lab
Overview
Our Impact
The Lab enhances NDI’s efforts to make democracy work, building upon the Institute’s longstanding support for democratic actors around the world.
Leveraging Expertise for Impact
Drawing on the Institute’s 42 years of experience across more than 150 countries, the Lab brings together in-house experts who have diverse backgrounds working on democracy issues ranging from political inclusion of marginalized communities to supporting more effective local governments to strengthening participation in political parties and more. The Lab leverages these different skill and knowledge sets to adopt an innovative and cross-cutting approach to current and emerging issues. In recent years, members of the Lab have brought their expertise and innovation to the Institute’s programming to maximize NDI’s impact, including:
- Supporting community activists in their advocacy to government officials across Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, and Zambia to become increasingly responsive to the needs and priorities of the disability community in their countries;
- Engaging adolescent girls and young women to foster political skills and aspirations to be politically active young leaders;
- Launching a new local government peer-to-peer network with the Open Government Partnership (OGP) to leverage the expertise of anti-corruption reformers and advocates from around the world to advance the fight against corruption;
- Creating a space for the youth party international organizations to build closer relationships and develop their own cross-network initiatives; and
- Facilitating the formation of the Global Network for Domestic Election Monitors (GNDEM) and related international standards for citizen election observation to promote credible elections.
In its new consolidated form, the Lab will integrate these different areas of expertise for more adept and efficient programming around the world.
