WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National Democratic Institute (NDI) is deeply saddened by the passing of His Excellency Festus Gontebanye Mogae, former president of the Republic of Botswana, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and the people of Botswana.
NDI will remember President Mogae as a principled statesman and a steadfast champion of democratic values, whose leadership helped cement Botswana’s record as a beacon of democracy, stability, and good governance in Africa. His commitment to the rule of law, the integrity of democratic institutions, the protection of fundamental rights, and transparency and accountability left a lasting impact not only in his country, but across the continent.
“NDI was honored to work alongside President Mogae in his post-presidential service advancing democracy and peace, including through international election observation efforts and dialogue initiatives promoting constitutionalism and democratic governance in Africa,” said NDI Chair, Tom Daschle. “We mourn President Mogae’s passing, but take solace in celebrating a life exceptionally well-lived in the service of his country and the continent. His legacy will continue to inspire current and future generations of democratic leaders around the world”.
