Statement on the Arrest Warrant Issued by the Hong Kong Government Against Staff Member Joey Siu

Thursday, December 14, 2023

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) has been informed of the issuance of an arrest warrant for Joey Siu, an esteemed NDI colleague and a prominent civil society activist, along with four other pro-democracy activists. This action by the Hong Kong government follows recent arrest warrants issued against eight other distinguished Hong Kong democracy activists living abroad.

Joey's honorable and brave work, leading peaceful protests and championing the Hong Kong democracy movement, has made her a target of the Hong Kong authorities. Hong Kong authorities continue to use the draconian National Security Law to target political opposition, media, civil society, academia, the private sector and activists in exile. Such actions reveal Beijing’s broken promises of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy.

"Joey Siu has been a champion for so many around the world who support the promise of democratic values and freedoms in Hong Kong. Her dedication to the cause, even in the face of personal risk, is commendable,” said NDI’s Chair, Tom Daschle. “We stand firmly with Joey and the millions of other Hong Kongers who support democracy and human rights in Hong Kong. NDI urges the international community to stand in solidarity with the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement and all communities facing Beijing’s transnational repression," he said.

NDI is a non-partisan, non-governmental organization that works with partners in more than seventy countries, supporting the democratic principles of transparency, accountability and inclusion. Since 1997, NDI has worked legally and transparently with Hong Kong partners from across the political spectrum, supporting the democratic rights assured in the Basic Law and Sino-British Joint Declaration

NDI remains unwavering in its commitment to support and advance democratic principles across Asia and around the globe. The Institute believes in the right of every individual to express their views freely, participate in their country's civic life, and live in a society that upholds fundamental human rights.
