Kofi Annan made a difference in the lives of millions of people around the world through a lifetime dedicated to advancing peacekeeping efforts, promoting health and development, and defending democracy and human rights. NDI, which gave Annan its Democracy Award in 2001, was proud to have worked with him and the Kofi Annan Foundation to safeguard electoral integrity around the world.
"Kofi Annan was a man of deep moral conviction, compassion and grace who understood our responsibilities to one another, and his responsibilities to keep speaking out even after leaving office," said NDI Chairman Madeleine Albright, who served with Annan at the United Nations.
NDI extends its heartfelt condolences to Kofi Annan's family. The Institute will always honor his legacy alongside the giants who have stood for freedom and human dignity.
