The National Democratic Institute (NDI) strongly condemns the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump yesterday in Butler, Pennsylvania, and wishes him and others who were injured a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with Mr. Trump, the family of the attendee killed and those who were injured.

“Political violence has no place in the United States, nor in any democracy. An attack on any candidate or officeholder is an attack on the foundations of democratic politics. All of us who value democracy must stand united to condemn and oppose violence,” said Dr. Tamara Cofman Wittes, NDI’s president.

Democracy relies on the free, open, and peaceful contestation of ideas. As Americans move toward elections in November, let us act as one to uphold the democratic ideals that define our country and that inspire people around the world.
