Statement by National Democratic Institute President Derek Mitchell on Maria Ressa and Reynaldo Santos

Monday, June 15, 2020

The verdict by a court in the Philippines to find journalists Maria Ressa and Reynaldo Santos guilty of “cyber libel” is a tragedy for democracy and freedom of the press. This action is sadly the latest in a string of troubling moves by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s government to silence independent journalism and attack the foundations of a free society. NDI joins democracy defenders around the world in condemning this action and in calling on Philippine authorities to drop all charges against Maria, Reynaldo and Rappler.

In 2017, NDI was honored to present Rappler and Maria with our annual Democracy Award for their work as champions of accountability and transparency. “We are journalists and we will not be intimidated,” Maria said upon receiving the award. “We will shine the light. We will hold the line." Maria, Reynaldo and Rappler’s commitment to continuing their work despite the risks is an inspiration to anyone anywhere fighting for democratic rights, and is a reminder of the vital role journalists and other independent voices around the world play to bring the truth to light, and hold their leaders accountable.
