Ten years ago Mohamed Bouazizi of Tunisia set in motion forces far greater than himself -- protests across the Arab world against the same tyranny and oppression that led him to take his own life. All he wanted to do was find a way to support his family. He was just like any one of us.

While tens of millions of people across the region have spent the last ten years trying to shake off the autocracies that have ruled for decades, only Tunisia has succeeded in transitioning to democratic governance.  It has been a long and difficult journey. NDI has been there since the beginning.  And Tunisians can continue to count on us for support.

We know it takes more than elections for democracy to thrive. Accountability is critical — representatives of the people working For the people, not just for entrenched interests and elites.  We also know as NDI Chairman Madeleine Albright says, “democracy must deliver.”

That means jobs, education, water, sanitation and also the ability to create businesses and innovate. Without the ability to live full and meaningful lives, Tunisia's democracy is unfinished business and it is understandable why some Tunisians may not celebrate the historic gains of the last decade.

Across the Middle East, where citizens are no longer content to cede decisions to autocrats and despots, the obstacles to achieving freedom are daunting. There is a long way to go to achieve democracy, more equitable prosperity and better lives, but NDI stands in solidarity with those activists engaged in this necessary struggle.

قبل عشر سنوات ، أطلق محمد البوعزيزي من تونس قوى أكبر منه بكثير - احتجاجات في جميع أنحاء العالم العربي ضد نفس الاستبداد والقمع الذي دفعه إلى الانتحار. كل ما أراد فعله هو إيجاد طريقة لإعالة أسرته. كان مثل أي واحد منا.

بينما قضى عشرات الملايين في جميع أنحاء المنطقة السنوات العشر الماضية في محاولة التخلص من الأنظمة الاستبدادية التي حكمت لعقود ، فإن تونس وحدها هي التي نجحت في الانتقال إلى الحكم الديمقراطي. لقد كانت رحلة طويلة وصعبة. كان المعهد الديمقراطي الوطني هناك منذ البداية. ويمكن للتونسيين أن يستمروا في الاعتماد علينا في الدعم.نحن نعلم أن ازدهار الديمقراطية يتطلب أكثر من مجرد انتخابات. المساءلة أمر بالغ الأهمية - ممثلو الأشخاص الذين يعملون من أجل الناس ، وليس فقط من أجل المصالح والنخب الراسخة. ، كما تقول رئيسة المعهد الديمقراطي الوطني مادلين أولبرايت ، "تحتاج الديمقراطية إلى تحقيق نتيجة". وهذا يعني الوظائف والتعليم والمياه والصرف الصحي وكذلك القدرة على إنشاء الأعمال التجارية والابتكار بدون القدرة على عيش حياة كاملة وذات مغزى ، فإن الديمقراطية في تونس هي عمل غير مكتمل ومن المفهوم لماذا قد لا يحتفل بعض التونسيين بالمكاسب التاريخية للعقد الماضي.

في جميع أنحاء الشرق الأوسط ، حيث لم يعد المواطنون راضين عن التنازل عن قراراتهم للحكام المستبدين والطغاة ، فإن العوائق التي تحول دون تحقيق الحرية مروعة. لا يزال الطريق طويلاً لتحقيق الديمقراطية ، وتحقيق ازدهار أكثر إنصافًا وحياة أفضل ، لكن المعهد الديمقراطي الوطني يقف متضامنًا مع هؤلاء النشطاء المشاركين في هذا النضال الضروري
