Georgia Public Opinion Survey Shows Support for European Integration, Strong Political Opposition Party
Nearly 60 percent of Georgians believe the country should join the European Union; jobs and poverty continue to top citizens’ priorities. While the Georgian Dream party remains the strongest political force, 82 percent of citizens believe it is important to have a strong opposition party. Visualizations of Afghan Runoff Election Preliminary Results Available on NDI Data Website
As an audit of Afghanistan’s runoff presidential election ballots continues, NDI has added preliminary runoff results to its Afghanistan election data website, which aims to make election information more accessible and transparent. The data show preliminary results of the runoff between Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani, including turnout information and a comparison of the results of the April 5 first round and June 14 second round results. Youth in Africa Come Together to Focus on Building a Culture of Democracy and Peace
Young men and women from across Africa came together this week to discuss how to engage youth in democracy, elections and governance on the continent. During two regional meetings in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Pretoria, South Africa, participants gauged youth perspectives on how to create a culture of peace and democracy in Africa, and set the stage for a continental youth consultation Sept. 15-16 in Nairobi, Kenya. Civic and Voter Education Produce Hope for a New Road in Malawi
For years, Trizza Ndalama has struggled to sell her produce close to home. “The big market where I can sell the produce at a reasonable profit is very far from this village and the road is very bad.” But she is encouraged that things will get better soon. Ahead of tripartite elections in May, NDI's local partner, Nanzikambe Arts Development Organization, worked with voters to draft a social contract addressing voters' development priorities, including construction of the road that would aid Ndalama and a health care center, which candidates signed and pledged to carry out.
