On Saturday, December 4, 2021, The Gambia held its first presidential election since its democratic transition from authoritarian rule in 2017. To ensure the public was informed about election preparations and to build confidence in the election process, NDI supported the country’s first long term citizen election observation group, Peace Ambassadors - The Gambia (PAG), to systematically observe and report on the pre-election and election period. Ahead of the election, PAG deployed 59 trained observers across the seven administrative regions and 53 constituencies of The Gambia to observe the voter registration process as well as the candidate nomination and campaign periods. On election day, PAG, joined with two other youth-led organizations -- Activista and the Nation Youth Parliament -- to form the Elections Watch Committee (EWC). Together, EWC deployed 460 trained and accredited observers including 160 mobile observers and 300 polling station observers using a proportional distribution methodology. The EWC's reports have been well received by the IEC and other electoral stakeholders in the country.
